a live look outside tonight and it is a beautiful night. after we cranked up the heat today for much of the bay area. but how long will that heat hang around? good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm j.r. stone. the bay area gets a taste of summer with one of the warmest days of the year. it drew large crowds to beaches and other popular spots where people could soak up the sun. >> uh- just going for a river float. first hot day of the

year. going to get out there and enjoy the water in the north bay, people took advantage of the warm weather and decided to cool off by hitting the russian river. >> for some that meant kayaking while others decided to relax on the beach, pointing out this was a good chance to beat the weekend crowds. as always, if you are going to go out on the water, it is recommended that you wear a life jacket. >> today felt pretty good, but what about tomorrow? >> yeah, that's a good question. sandyha patel is here with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. yeah, and that 24 hour forecast will include heat, but not for everyone. >> armand jr, let me show you a live picture right now from our mount tam cam. you see what's back. the fog surrounding sutro tower. onshore winds have come up 13 miles an hour in fairfield. it's not strong. it's the direction of the wind that's taking those temperatures down by 11 degrees in santa rosa. down nine in oakland. you can certainly feel it. if you stepped outside, but it was a warm one today with san francisco getting up to 81 degrees. it was the warmest since october 86th, in san jose, fairfield, santa rosa, 83 in

oakland. and as we take a look at your 24 hour forecast tomorrow morning, we're going to start out with some fog at the coast, 50s 60s warming up away from the coast is where it's going to be most noticeable, even hotter inland with low 90s showing up there mid 60s coast side so cooler at the beaches and it will be a mild one inland at 7 p.m, but rapid cooling along the coast. i'll let you know what's in store for mother's day weekend. and i can tell you this much, j.r. it involves change. >> sandhya, thank you very much. happening now. president biden is in the bay area for another whirlwind stop on the campaign trail. he landed at moffett field near mountain view this evening before a boarding a helicopter to fly to san francisco. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has a closer look at the president's visit and the areas you should avoid. reporter air force one touched down on moffett field in mountain view thursday evening. >> president joe biden deplaned, along with advisers, secret service officers, traveling

press and more minutes before the president landed, we spoke with melissa michaelson, professor of political science at menlo college. >> it's a cliche, but we are the nation's piggy back for these campaigns. there's a lot of people here with a lot of money and a lot of interest in who wins these elections. >> the last time the president was in the bay area was in february, when he attended two events in support of his reelection campaign campaign donations are a way of showing how well you're doing. >> it's almost like people are voting with their dollars. >> it is likely we will see other campaigning in the bay area in march, independent presidential candidate robert f kennedy jr announced his running mate in oakland. she's a silicon valley lawyer. >> if you're running a hot senate campaign in montana or a tight house race in pennsylvania, you're going to try to come to california and do a fundraiser, because, again, there's a lot of people here with a lot of money and a lot of interest in helping out. >> according to a white house statement, the president will participate in two campaign

receptions on friday afternoon. one of them will be in the south bay, the palo alto unified school district sent an alert out to parents notifying students and staff they will be ending school early on friday at certain locations due to traffic and other concerns. president biden is scheduled to depart from moffett field friday around four and continue his campaign fundraising in seattle. in mountain view, lauren martinez abc seven news graduation season is underway in the bay area. >> cal state east bay kicked things off with their commencement today. this was the first of nine ceremonies between now and sunday to celebrate the class of 2024. cal state east bay has remained peaceful as protests happened on other college campuses and today's graduation went off without a hitch. cal's graduation is saturday and things are going forward as planned. despite the ongoing protest encampment routine security will be in place for the ceremony at california memorial stadium and at cal. officials are working to remove upsetting graffiti found

on a building near the protest encampment, officials told abc seven news. they'll continue to do everything in their power so that every student feels safe, respected and welcome. >> at usf, protesters remain on the lawn near saint ignatius church. >> that's right, protesters have been there since last friday. university officials say they're committed to keeping students, faculty and staff safe on campus at san francisco state. >> things grew heated earlier today when protesters marched into the humanities building. administrators told us. the group eventually left and the building they left the building returned to the quad area encampment. faculty tells us the peaceful, the protest that is have been peaceful. >> the oakland airport is getting a new name. after a final vote approved the change. it will be called san francisco bay oakland international airport. despite criticism and an oncoming lawsuit from the city of san francisco, the board says the main reason is location . research shows it could attract more passengers by letting them know the city is another gateway to the bay area,

and a name change can certainly do that. >> that brings the knowledge for people pass the mississippi to really understand where oakland sits in the greater bay area and also internationally, really of understanding from people from around the world of where oakland is in this greater bay area. >> in a statement to abc seven news, the san francisco city attorney's office writes, it is disappointing that oakland chose to ignore our multiple offers to collaborate on an alternative name to and avoid litigation. we have strong federal trademark infringement claims against oakland, and they have given us no choice but to move forward with next steps in our lawsuit. >> millions of californians could be seeing changes to their utility bills after the california public utilities commission approved a flat rate proposal. while there are some people who wanted the cpuc to reject it, saying it doesn't do enough to encourage people to switch to solar and electric vehicles. here's reporter becca habegger from sacramento. after paying utility tax.

>> do we want it now? protesters call it a tax, but we should note this is not a tax. it is a new monthly charge. and regulators, the california public utilities commission or cpuc, did unanimously vote to approve it. the item passes starting in early 2026. p-g-and-e's residential electric customers will see a charge of $24.15 on their bill each month. customers in the low income programs care and fera will see a monthly charge of 6 or $12, respectively. proponents including the cpuc, point out this is not designed to make the utilities more money because when this monthly charge goes into effect, the cost of electricity will decrease by approximately 5 to $0.07 per kilowatt hour. as a result, they say, people won't see a drastic change on their monthly bills, with the fixed charge. >> is the same amount you'll see on your bill every month, so it won't change. it will add more transparency and more predictability so people understand exactly what they're paying for. the utility reform

network consumer advocacy organization, says they expect the average customer will see their monthly bill increase just one and a half to $3, and low income customers are projected to see their bill decrease on average, 4 to $9 per month. >> but critics worry this will lead to much higher bills for many people. >> so people who had small bills like a $30 electricity bill, are now going to have this $24 added to it. >> plus, they still have to pay, you know, the for their usage of energy. so they're going to see their bills go up. >> this is happening because state lawmakers passed a bill in 2022 requiring the cpuc to implement a new fixed charge for its largest electric utilities. since many other states have already done this, critics point out there is no cap to this monthly charge, and worry it could go up. regulators say any request by any utility to raise this monthly charge would have to go through them in downtown sacramento, becca habegger. >> new at 11. capitola city council has approved a draft design plan and timeline for the

wharf tonight. it's slated for reopening in august. capitola boat and bait on the pier announced it will be reopening with it. there will be three events there this summer and fall, which will help them form more long term plans for activities their crews are currently finalizing repairs on the head of the wharf and making their way toward the entryway, which will need more extensive work. a bay area sailor who was killed at pearl harbor has been officially identified more than 80 years after the attack. service member starring brooks winfield died at the age of 22 aboard the uss oklahoma. today, he was given a proper burial with full military honors at arlington national cemetery. until now, winfield was interred with other unidentified fallen service members at a hawaiian cemetery, but a genealogist working for the military got involved in 2021 to help identify winfield's remains and made the formal announcement earlier this year. >> new developments with the bay area native and former major

league baseball player accused of murder. a placer county judge today ruled there is enough evidence in the case to go to trial. danny seraphine and a woman are charged with breaking into his in-laws home in lake tahoe in 2021 and shooting them. his father in law died while his mother in law was severely injured. she later died by suicide. seraphine went to sarah high school in san mateo and played for several major league teams. >> governor newsom is calling on half moon bay to expedite housing for farm workers or face legal action. there's been a spotlight on housing in the community after a mass shooting at two mushroom farms last year. >> i felt like an attack, you know, halfmoon bay is a priority , you know, to build farmworker housing, low income housing. >> do you think the process is taking too long? it's adequate time. we've done a lot for this community. now it's time for the county to do something for us. >> there have been two meetings without a vote. newsom wants a

be knocking on this friday morning. >> yeah, we'll be somewhere in america. but where? >> where? okay, guys, this is going to be the mother of all surprises. >> looking forward to that. well bart is low on passengers and low on money today, the transit agency's board of directors met to talk about the latest budget projections. they they say nearly $2 billion in state and federal funding will run out in the next two years. bart blames labor costs and declining sales tax revenues for its struggling finances. but they say the biggest factor is low ridership. as of march, it's only 42% of what it was pre-pandemic. now, the agency is sounding the alarm about the future. >> the big, very existential issue is that we are relying on

$870,000 a day in emergency assistance. and, you know, we know that's not a sustainable business plan. >> bart is looking at a 2026 ballot measure for critical funding. the agency estimates it could raise $1.5 billion a year if it passes in the south bay. >> it's a much different story, with $500 million going toward bringing bart to downtown san jose. the price tag of the extension nearly $13 billion. abc seven news reporter tara campbell with why there's optimism this project will get done. reporter a major boost thursday for the future of bart. >> the federal government announcing $500 million to help extend services into downtown san jose. >> it is a sign of incredible confidence that the federal transportation administration and the president are interested in this project here, and this $500 million inches us closer to getting the project complete, the santa clara valley transportation authority is responsible for the

construction. >> cindy chavez is the santa clara county supervisor and vta board chair. and this allows silicon valley, literally the heart of silicon valley, to be connected to our greater region. the six mile, four station project will take trains from the current berryessa transit terminal into downtown san jose, with an underground tunnel ending in the city of santa clara. >> it's critical because it is the last connector needed to make sure that we have transit high speed transit around the bay area. >> the funding announcement comes as bart is currently running on federal emergency funds that run out in 2025. bart is a very substantial generator of our economy. >> the idea that how it links throughout the region, vta ceo says it's in discussions with bart on ways to help support the service. all of us are concerned about making sure that that connection and that transportation system continues to work. we're connecting to it

because we do believe in that. >> the vta will now request another $6 billion in federal funds to cover roughly 50% of the project's cost. >> the other half is being covered by local and state dollars, and the current projection for the start of service is 2037. tara campbell abc seven news. >> we knew raging waters would be reopening in san jose this summer, and now we have learned it will have a new name. it will be called cowabunga water park, and new signs have now gone up. the popular park was set to close for good, but city. the city managed to find a new operator. >> many of the bay area's top environmental leaders joined abc news correspondent bob woodruff tonight to discuss solutions to a growing challenge protecting some of the most unique wildlife territories on earth. the meeting took place at the filoli estate in woodside. it was sponsored by a group called global conservation that has a unique mission training and outfitting the guards who protect sites like the one you're seeing in mirador

national park in guatemala, mirador and other parks around the globe are vulnerable to threats, from poaching to illegal logging and mining. abc news is now launching a live series with bob woodruff, following the nonprofit's work. >> we went to ecuador and the national park. areas there that are protected have been moved in , have been taken over by some of the gangs to do gold mining. so that's the kind of threat to global conservation is based in san francisco and was founded by former silicon valley executive jeff morgan. >> a rare apology from apple the tech giant says it missed the mark with an ad for its new ipad pro. the ad shows a massive hydraulic press flattening tools for art, music and creativity. they've replaced by their replaced by the new ipad pro. now, critics thought it was a metaphor for how big tech has cashed in on creative tools and also crushed the market for them. apple says it was meant to

weather is nice and warm. >> any time it's like that. sandhya, it is a fun time outside at least comfortable time outside? >> absolutely. and you know what? if you're a warm weather lover, you were in heaven today, jr and ummah. tomorrow we're going to hang on to the heat away from the coast. so i do want to show you a live picture from our golden gate bridge camera. notice the fog is dropping visibility and it's not just at the golden gate bridge. also from our santa cruz camera, we're starting to see some of that fog rolling in, so watch out! san francisco hitting 81 today averages 64. so it was a good 17 degrees above the average for this time of year. certainly didn't make it to record territory, but it was warmer than average. as we take a look back through around a sunset, you will notice from our sutro tower camera, the fog just coming in through the golden gate. this is going to be our cooling mechanism right along the coastline for tomorrow. certainly feeling it right now. it's already 55 degrees from a high of 81. in the city. many

areas in the 50s and the 60s. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow. the heat is going to build inland. so santa rosa going from 86 to 90 tomorrow four degrees warmer. same thing for concord. but san francisco you're going to go from 81 to 75 down six degrees. san jose coming up two degrees to 88 degrees. still going to see that offshore wind flow, northeasterly wind flow with this area of high pressure at least inland will feel that heat for another day. you can certainly see that there was quite a bit of clearing along the coastline, but the fog is starting to come back in from our emeryville camera. seeing a lovely view right now. overnight tonight, fog at the beaches tomorrow, hot inland, cooler at the coast and sunday. it's going to be nice for mother's day as we go hour by hour. first thing in the morning, 50s and 60s on those temperatures as we head into the noontime hour, notice where the warmth will be felt inland in the 80s, coming up into the 90s for parts of the bay area. certainly that fog along the coastline is going to prevent you from really warming much. so do expect a cooler day,

some relief near the beaches, 40s to 60s on your temperatures in the morning tomorrow afternoon in the south bay, 86 in gilroy, 88 in san jose. it's going to be warmer than average on the peninsula. if you like today's weather, you're certainly going to enjoy it tomorrow. 84 los altos, 81 san mateo along the coast. half moon bay, 66 degrees downtown san francisco 75 degrees in the north bay. mid 80s from san rafael up towards petaluma, but 90 in calistoga and santa rosa. 80 in oakland, 83 in san leandro. had inland. and you're going to feel that heat 90 in concord, 89 degrees in livermore. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. it's going to be a hot one. inland coast cools. we'll hold on to some 90s for saturday. the start of the weekend. but notice the coast and bay continue to drop off and then on sunday, temperatures will drop everywhere. it is going to be nice for moms. any outdoor activities you may have planned? certainly. cooling continues on monday before temperatures
